Lucinda Loves Nashville and I Love Lucinda…

lu.jpg I had the honor of going to see Lucinda Williams, one of my favorite singer songwriters, at the Ryman Friday night. I have seen Lu nearly a half dozen times and every show is amazing.

I heard from Ryman employees that Lucinda didn’t sound check and showed up only 20 minutes before taking the stage, impressive. She was wearing a little black Dickies zipper dress with black pants (I own the same dress).

Lucinda talked about how much Nashville inspired most of the songs that she performed. She was also sure to mention how much ‘hell’ she has raised in this town.

I learned that Juke Joint, one of my favorite photography books, inspired her song 2 kool 2 be 4-gotten. The book is a true look in to the blues of the Mississippi Delta, where I lived before moving back to my hometown of Nashville.

Buddy Miller and some members of the opening band, The Heartless Bastards jumped on stage when Lucinda sang Joy. She closed the show with Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe.

It was the highlight of my weekend and now I’m ready to go see her again!
