Christmas Cheer is Here!

I can’t believe December is already here. There is nothing like Opryland Hotel that brings me warm Christmas joy!

As a child my family would visit the hotel for the beauty of the Christmas lights display and I always had the dream of spending the night in one of those rooms. Now I can mark that wish off my list!

I recently had the pleasure of spending a few nights in the lovely Cascades area of the hotel and oh what a treat! I loved the view from my little balcony (pictured) and the sounds of the water fall as I slept with my door open. You can even choose your favorite country music star to greet you as your wake-up call. How cool? George Jones woke me up every morning!

The endless amount of activities on the grounds is amazing. There is everything from shopping and cruising the river to relaxing at the spa. I checked out a slew of activities that are part of A Country Christmas celebration.

While it was a little messy outside the first night, my “bo” and I held hands and watched the flipping of the switch. The hotel went from dim to a beautiful bright white with the 2 million Christmas lights shining. Santa, Diamond Rio, Mayor Karl Dean and Audrey Geisel (widow of Dr. Seuss) were all on hand for the festivities. Tasty hot chocolate warmed our insides!

My next stop was to Old Hickory Steakhouse to sample some of the finest cheese I have ever tasted. Really, it is worth a trip to go visit the Maitre Fromager Richard Peterson (pictured) who chooses artisanal cheeses for every palette. Peterson says he is one of only some fifty restaurant Maitre Fromager’s in the country. Yum-yum!

After living in my cheese dream I was off to check out the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes at the Grand Ole Opry House. The show included the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and “The Living Nativity Scene.” Yes- that meant live camels, sheep and even a donkey.

As I grabbed my bags and headed in for the night I was surprised to hear the sound of one of my favorite honky tonk bands Hillbilly Casino (pictured) coming from the Jack Daniel’s Saloon. So, I had to stop in and dance a little.

Good times! Stay tuned for day 2 of my Christmas trip right here in Music City.
